Review of Slashers Axe Throwing & Ales, Costa Mesa, USA

I have to admit, I was initially put off by the name “Slashers,” thinking it might imply a lack of seriousness about the sport. More like a theme bar maybe, than a real axe throwing experience. But I was pleasantly surprised that was far from the case and really glad I tried them out! I’d say it was probably the best axe throwing bar I have visited in the USA.

From the moment I walked in, I was hit by this buzzing atmosphere, which felt more like happy hour in the best bar in town, than your average throwing range. The enthusiastic welcomer made me feel right at home, and quickly found me a spare lane even though the place was packed (and I’d just dropped in on the off-chance of a throw).

The horror-theme was infused into the environment with suitable decor adding a unique touch to the atmosphere. I thought it was just the right amount to make it a fun and stylish place to hang out, without being gaudy.

It was a large open ex-retail unit, all blacked out, with red lighting and cartoony ‘horror’ characters projected on to the 18 single-target lanes (each named after various horror film characters).

I also loved the smart bar, which had wide selection of ales and other drinks. There was a large area for spectators around the bar and benches behind all the lanes where groups could sit and drink comfortably, between turns.

One unexpected bonus was the choice of two decent hatchets and even a big (felling) axe to throw. It was great to have these options, and I spent a good time improving my big axe throwing. My host was happy to leave me to it, when she could see I was ok to throw, but did check in regularly for a friendly encouraging word. I did notice that the axe coaches did spend plenty of time with other groups as needed, to help them get the hang of it.

The selection of 13 projected games was great, including a “standard” 5 ring target and other games like tic tac toe (noughts and crosses), bowling and “runestones”. Possibly they missed a trick in not having some sort of monster killing game, but it was kind of refreshing that they didn’t overplay the horror theme (and in any case the games were presumably off the shelf axe throwing games from the supplier). The scoreboard was also projected, with the option to choose an image – horror-themed of course.

The targets were made of good end-grain blocks, and my target, at least, looked like it had just been built. They all looked well cared for in any case and clearly regularly watered. The whole place gave off the impression of being well cared for.

As I left, the host at the door made sure to thank me for visiting and hoped I’d come again, in a very genuine and friendly way. It was just typical of the emphasis Slashers evidently place on making the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable for each customer and I am sure I will visit again if I’m ever back in the area.

Pros

  • Friendly, supportive staff
  • Good boards and axes
  • Great choice of games
  • Fun, stylish environment
  • Well stocked bar and large bar seating area

Cons

  • The “Slashers” theme was a little off-putting
