A unique urban setting for some great axe throwing
Axe Junkies provides a great axe throwing experience in a unique urban setting – “a sort of cool axe throwing dungeon”
Review of Axe Junkies, Worcester, UK
Axe Junkies is one of the best axe throwing venues I’ve visited in the UK. It is located in Worcester city centre, in a row of units built under the historic railway arches. Five single-target axe throwing lanes have been cleverly inserted into the arches. The backdrop of the arches, the metal caging for the lanes and axes hanging axes on the walls all help create a unique and suitably urban environment. A sort of cool axe throwing dungeon.
They do advertise that you may share lanes with strangers (up to 4 per lane), but when we arrived the axe coach directed our party of three to our own two lanes, as there was no-one else there. That was a nice treat. (Another couple did arrive after we started and he just put them on another lane.)
The initial instruction and safety talk was brief, but sufficient. The axe coach did a simple one-handed throw demo and then we were free to throw as we liked. He did check on us regularly though and was very happy to chat about all aspects of axe throwing. (The other couple were evidently first-timers, and the axe coach spent a lot more time with them, which they seemed to appreciate.)
The house axes were basic hatchets. They were taped up with electrical tape, which I wasn’t keen on, but it didn’t seem to affect our throwing. However, as the time progressed, the axe coach brought out some more interesting axes and throwers. There was everything from a Flying Fox to a utility spade, which all added to a great evening.
The end grain boards were superb. A pleasure to throw on. There was a simple custom made projector system with a handful of different games to try. We thought there were plenty of games for an hour, but they had plans to add new games in future too.
The venue takes up to 20, which I’d think was just about right. Anything more would be a bit too snug. A perfect location for a party or work group.
There were a few other nice features, like chalk boards on the walls to record high scores and the custom lettering on the walls, which just helped emphasize their unique vibe. We felt very much at home there and the hour went a lot quicker than in many other venues I’ve visited. Would definitely go back.
