Hi, I’m Pete George aka “The Axe Thrower” – a nickname ascribed to me by various UK national newspapers for my passion for all things axe throwing. I thought it also made a suitable name for this blog, which is dedicated to all the other axe throwing enthusiasts out there. I hope you enjoy it!
A Little About Me..
TheAxeThrower.com is my personal blog. I’ve created it in the form of an online magazine, but essentially it is a growing record of all the axe throwing knowledge and ideas I’m accumulating, including reviews of my visits to different axe throwing venues around the world. (I do provide consultancy for others who want to start an axe throwing business on my other site: axethrowingconsultancy.com)
As a keen conservationist/arborist in my spare time, I’ve owned and used an assortment of axes for decades, but it was actually through my day job as a business coach that I first got into throwing them. In the late 2010s, I was working with a large bank in Brussels, when the North American style indoor axe throwing was just becoming a popular team night out. Returning to the UK in 2019, I found indoor axe throwing was making similar inroads, and also that there was a thriving, if niche, outdoor scene too. By 2020 I was thoroughly hooked on all aspects of the sport and spent much of the Covid lockdowns seeking out new ways to throw.
In 2021, I opened my own indoor range in Cheltenham, UK. Obviously I did extensive research into axes, targets, technique, etc., but ultimately I built it to suit the kind of axe throwing experience I often found lacking in other places. After all, if no-one else liked it, then I’d least have somewhere to throw! Fortunately, it was extremely popular right from the start. I developed the business for three years, actively coaching customers, and training other axe coaches. At the end of 2023, I transitioned this profitable, sustainable axe throwing business over to the current management team.
Since the start of 2024 I’ve been travelling the world, increasing my knowledge of what’s going on in axe throwing worldwide, and providing consultancy for prospective axe throwing venue owners. Along the way, my plan is to add axe throwing features and reviews to this blog.
TheAxeThrower.com does encompass a very broad “axe throwing world” – quite deliberately. Today there are many ways of throwing axes, and other bladed tools, at targets. I believe there is a lot to learn from all of them – even when some adherents of one discipline are often unaware of different ways of throwing to themselves (or sometimes even positively avoid the other disciplines!).
Hopefully, this blog will help create a better understanding of the axe throwing world (/worlds). If it encourages more folks to get involved in throwing that would be great. At the very least, I hope it provides an interesting read for other enthusiasts.
Pete
